That is my late mother on the cover, and the book is about the glorious bouffant hairstyle that was all the rage in the 60s and 70s.

Bouffant – a beatnik fairytale is a collage-style picture book for teenagers and adults, with vivid images and whimsical text, as well as a surprising and fun collection of back pages that educate us all on the world of the BEATNIK.

The book is a love letter to my mother, and it has many twists and turns and outrageous things that happen, but in the end it is about the understanding between mother and daughter.

This book is also a homage to the beatniks, those rebel children of the arts and letters, in whose blood ran whiskey and wine, daring dreams and potent visions, and they were wild wild wild. Like most of us wished we could be …

This book is considered an LGBTQ book.

What a magical Beatnik fairytale! It takes you to another time, I enjoyed every minute reading this book, looking at all the detail. Coco Mary is a very talented author and artist. I just love how the pictures and the story comes to life, well that’s what it feels like to me. That Cupid, is so funny and adorable. This is a must read, you’ll enjoy it, guaranteed!

I have never read anything like this before. It is entirely unique. And the colors of the collage illustrations are so vibrant, they pop off the page. The characters are very cool. Cupid is my favorite. 21st century Cupid, a they! I love it!
I asked myself the question, for what age group is this book appropriate? And then I saw Flower Child Books, social media handle: for children 9 to 99. That makes sense!
Although I don’t know if I would read this book to my nine-year-old. It’s a little risqué, but for teenagers and even young adults, yay!

This Bouffant fairy tale uses photography and collage to bring you a slice of beatnik culture. Coco uses vintage images of her family with photos of the cool characters in her current real life to create a unique visual journal. It makes you long for San Francisco in the 50’s and 60’s. She even provides a list of the songs of the time, and the books to read, in case you want to recreate the vibe at home. It’s a super cool and original book, I can tell it was created with LOVE.

Where should I begin? First of all I’m so inspired by Coco Mary’s work . It is such a pleasure to read and go through her book .
Second of all , It is by itself a piece of ART . So colorful , so lively , poetic, dreamy , fun and full of LOVE . It is all we need in our world right now . Much love to you Coco

When I saw the cover of this book in the bookstore, it jumped out at me! It was so much brighter than any of the books around it. I love all things vintage, and the beautiful covergirl’s go-go boots and bouffant hairstyle sold me. But when I read the interior, it was not about fashion at all, but about a mother and a daughter who do not see eye to eye. However, the lyrical text and art work bring humor and lightness to the situation, daring us not to take ourselves and our families so seriously.

I think this would make an amazing art film, by the way; with magical realism.
